Place these seashell winter votives on a mantel or as a centerpiece on your dining table for a serene coastal vibe. Pair them with other natural elements like driftwood, pinecones, or sprigs of evergreen for a balanced seasonal arrangement. These votives work beautifully in a minimalist or rustic decor setting, blending seamlessly with both contemporary and traditional styles.
Broken Seashell Winter Votives
Materials
Delicate seashells (assorted sizes)
Thick towel
Hammer
Clear glass votive holders
Strong adhesive glue
Small candles or LED tea lights
Optional: white or silver glitter
Directions
Lay a thick towel on a sturdy, flat surface. This will cushion the seashells and prevent excessive breakage.
Place the seashells on one half of the towel and fold the other half over them, fully covering the shells.
Gently tap the shells with a hammer through the folded towel. Aim for smaller, irregular pieces, but avoid pulverizing them.
Once you have achieved the desired size of broken shells, carefully remove them from the towel.
Apply a thin layer of adhesive glue to the outer surface of a glass votive holder.
Carefully press the broken seashell pieces onto the glued surface, arranging them in a mosaic-like pattern.
Continue until the entire surface is covered, leaving gaps as desired for a more textured look.
Allow the votive to dry completely according to the glue’s instructions.
Optionally, sprinkle a bit of white or silver glitter over the shells before the glue dries for a sparkly effect.
Once dry, place a small candle or LED tea light inside the votive and enjoy the warm glow.
Variations & Tips
For a more colorful votive, consider using shells painted in soft pastel hues before breaking them. Alternatively, mix in small pieces of colored sea glass for added texture and color. If you prefer a more rustic look, leave some of the glass votive exposed for a more organic feel. You can also experiment with different sizes of votive holders or even try creating a larger hurricane lamp with the same technique. For a festive touch, use red and green glitter or metallic paints to accentuate the seashells, making them perfect for holiday decor.
